The Holistic Self Care Center News
July 2007
|
| Dear Barb, |
|
There are days I wake up and wonder how did I, or this great country get to where it is? It comes from the freedom we have to express ourselves and to go anywhere we want to go, do anything we want to do and be anything we want to be. This concept of freedom is ours to have and to share because of the people defending and protecting us, and all the pioneers that came before us. We are free to experience life to it's fullest because others went before us and paved the way. Barb Tremlett Owner, Holistic Self Care Center |

| ** Star of the Month ** |
|
Our star of the month is Angie Adams. Angie has volunteered numerous hours at the HSC center doing a variety of projects. She has inventoried, reorganized, and labeled our entire lending library and it is beautiful sight! Angie has also spent a great deal of time working on our virtual yard sale, combing through hundreds of comic books and other articles to be sold on eBay.
Angie is very interested in herbs and is presently taking a class in
herbology. She also loves to sew and sell her items on eBay. You can
find her and the center's sale items at sewmuchfun47 on eBay. We are all truly grateful for the hard work that she has done for us here at the HSC Center and just want to give her a big THANK YOU!

Portion Control
It's All In The Palm Of Your Hand
By: Michelle Provencher, CNC
|
|
Everyone is saying that portion control is the key to a balanced diet, but how do we control the portion? What is a portion? What is a controlled portion? If there are no "bad" foods and everything can be eaten in moderation, what is moderation?
Part of the answer is to eat the appropriate balance of protein, carbohydrate, and fat in every meal and snack. Remember: Protein likes to move around, and carbohydrates grow abound. The other part is to take a look at the palm of your hand, just the palm not the fingers. Everyone has a different sized palm, which matches your body. If you eat one "palm" sized portion of protein and one "palm" sized portion of carbohydrate that is your portion control, not anyone else's. You can then fill in your meal with unlimited amounts of fibrous vegetables such as lettuce, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, peppers, cucumbers, sprouts, zucchini, summer squash, etc. This makes it a balanced meal.
For each snack just cut each portion to ½ palm size. A good snack is soy chips or an apple with some natural peanut butter. They are completely balanced snacks. So does all this mean I can have my chocolate cake and eat it too? Yes this means that you can have that "palm-sized" piece of chocolate cake if you have it with a meal of protein and fibrous vegetables (no other carbohydrates.) Bon Apetite!

Discovering Reflexology By: Elizabeth Teeboom, LMT
|
Reflexology literally means, the study of how one part of the body reflects or relates to another part of the body. There are areas on both the hands and the feet that make connections to the rest of the body via neural pathways. Using reflexology on the hands and feet can positively affect all other parts of the body. Our feet can give us clues to arising health problems and give us a chance to take preventative measures. Reflexology is a safe and natural therapy that can complement all other holistic therapies. Reflexology can be used to help balance and heal naturally, break up congestion in corresponding organs, improve circulation, help relieve pain, and improve energy.
Medical doctors are the only practitioners allowed to diagnose diseases. However, a reflexologist will recognize many types of foot ailments, allowing you the opportunity to get proper treatment. By finding tender reflex spots on the hands and feet, a reflexologist may be able to discern something about the condition of the corresponding organ. If you are suffering from constipation, headaches, sleeplessness, stress, or just tired feet, there is relief to be found on the bottom of you feet!
I practice a relaxation technique here at the center by appointment and specialize in doing so on "Ladies Night Out", which is held on the first Wednesday of every month (excluding July.) A regular appointment can be twenty-five to forty-five minutes long. During "Ladies Night Out" appointments are twenty-five minutes. Come to the center and give your feet a wonderful treatment, they will thank you by making the rest of you feel great! |
