Lighten
Up! Eating in balance with nature...
Winter is over and spring has finally arrived. If you
packed on a few extra pounds over the winter don't sweat it,
nows the time of year to shed that extra girth before the
summer arrives. How do we do it? Eat lighter foods like
fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, seeds, and beans. Reduce
your intake of animal foods like beef, pork, chicken, milk,
eggs, and cheese. These foods are eaten in larger quantities
in the fall and winter to provide us with warmth, now that the
weather is changing we can change with it. You will start to
see a better selection of produce begin to hit the markets,
locally farmers markets will start to open, and you will start
to BBQ more as it gets warmer. Your body will appreciate more
salads, raw vegetables, and lighter fare. Pick up a vegetarian
cookbook or go out to eat Thai Food instead of a Steakhouse.
Take advantage of this time of year to get more active, there
is no excuse to sit in on a Saturday when it's 70 degrees,
join a softball league, play a game of golf, or go for a walk
in a local park. There will be some recipes at the end of the
newsletter that will help lighten up your spring.

| Greetings!
Spring is the time of year of renewal in nature.
Plants grow, flowers bloom, animals come out of
hibernation, even insects start to become active
again. We as humans are also a part of this cycle,
although because of our schedules, jobs, and
lifestyles we can become disconnected from this
natural order of things. In this issue we will discuss
some things that will help us reconnect to our roots
in nature. We will discuss diet, spirituality, energy,
exercise, our surroundings, and our awareness of the
connection some have lost or have never had. Enjoy...

| Balance |
What does it mean to be in balance? Is it
possible to be soft and gentle all the time?
Is it even a good thing? What about the person
that sees no humor and must be serious at all
times? I can’t speak of true balance. I am
unbalanced. But I love it! I work too many
hours, of course I am so in love with my work
it doesn’t feel like work. I don’t want to
go home at night and I am excited to go to
work every morning. I talk about my work to
anyone who will listen. I think about work
even when I am sleeping. I just love what I
do. I want to do this for the rest of my life.
I am truly blessed. As much as I love my work
I do have to think of other things. Like
sleep, what clothes to wear, who’s birthday
did I just miss, does my car needs gas, I
haven’t seen my friends in months and my all
time favorite, where did this weight come
from? Sometimes in the excitement of taking
care of my passion, my baby, my company I
loose sight of me. Most of the time it’s ok,
sometimes it’s not. Balance to me is a
deliberate effort. I make myself take time
off, I make myself eat, I make myself go home
by 12am (most nights), I make myself plan time
with my friends. I believe balance is so
important. If I plan to be around for a long
time I need to have balance. So, when I play,
I play hard and when I work, I work hard. I
know at the end of each day I have lived a
full life. In my mind that is great balance of
the major stuff. Now is a great time to begin
my plan balancing the rest. Friends, exercise,
fresh air, fun, are all in summer plans. But
in all my balancing I will never be hard on
myself, because my work is my passion to teach
and support others, in that I believe I help
others find their balance!

| Acupuncture
for Stroke, Brain, and spinal chord injuries |
Acupuncture has long been used in the
rehabilitation of central nervous system and
brain injuries. Both research and clinical
experience show that the sooner acupuncture is
incorporated into a plan for management of
central nervous system injuries, the better
the outcome in recovery and rehabilitation.
Western medicine has shown that acupuncture
works by stimulating the central nervous
system to release naturally produced chemicals
into the brain, spinal cord and muscles. These
chemicals either change the experience of pain
or stimulate the release other chemicals, such
as endorphins, anti-inflammatory agents,
hormones and neurotransmitters which influence
the body's self-regulating systems. These
biochemical changes then stimulate the body's
own innate natural healing abilities and
promote physical and emotional well-being.
Along with restoring sensation and function to
affected areas, acupuncture can help the brain
or spinal cord injured patient by regulating
blood pressure, relieving spasticity, general
weakness, amnesia, speech impairments and
post-neurological insult depression. If you

| Employee
of the Month: Isabella Stubblefield By Cheri
McDonough |
Coworkers identify Isabella Stubblefield as
having a “sparkling personality”, “an
infectious laugh”, and “a sweet heart”.
As receptionist, I have overheard customers
that Isabella has worked on tell her
“That’s the best massage ever”, “Thank
you for being so thorough.” and “ Wow, I
learned so much from you.” If you are
interested in receiving a massage combined
with a better understanding of how to care for
yourself Isabella is eager to assist you. As
with all the therapists at the Center, she is
licensed, earning her certification two and a
half years ago graduating sum cum laude. She
switched careers from a dental assistant where
she enjoyed helping and teaching people about
dental hygiene to massage therapy regarding
the whole body. Isabella is constantly reading
books and taking classes on everything
available but her specialty is trigger points.
Working on trigger points involves hitting the
meridians of the body to release tension out
of the muscles. It is acupressure instead of
acupuncture, using fingers rather than
needles. Although Isabella was practicing
successfully in her hometown, hearing about
the Center’s range of people and services
she called to be a part of the integrative
team. She identifies the Center’s vision
“to care for and teach preventive self
care” looking at the overall general caring
of the customer. She appreciates in-house
training at HSC that she believes has been
“extremely valuable in relaying more
information to customers” and making
responsible referrals. Openly accepting of
continuous growth she welcomes customer
feedback in servicing their needs and often
offers tips on better ways to care for
themselves. Isabella proudly confirms that
with each massage she seeks not to miss a spot
and teach the customer something new, two more
reasons to book your massage with her.
